The use of animal products in cosmetics and toiletries, and animal testing have been the subject of much controversy. The European Union ban on animal testing has been postponed yet again to July 2002 because the alternatives have not yet proved to be fully reliable. This chapter examines the need for animal testing and looks at the alternatives. It alerts vegetarian readers to the ingredients in cosmetics and toiletries that may be derived from animals and it reveals what manufacturers really mean when they claim their products have not been tested on animals.
