Cosmetics Unmasked - Medical Matters

Cosmetics have been linked to a large number of health and skin problems. The main culprits responsible are usually the fragrances and colours but other ingredients such as preservatives, UV absorbers and any number of other ingredients, whether natural or artificial, may also play a part. People with a history of eczema, psoriasis, asthma or a similar condition, often believe they were born with it and are stuck with it forever, or they attribute it to an unavoidable agent in the modern environment. Only recently are we becoming aware of the part played by a host of artificial chemicals in our food, washing powders and cosmetics.

This chapter deals with the main medical conditions that can be triggered by the use of cosmetics and toiletries and other conditions such as cancer which have been linked to ingredients that are used in cosmetics. When a problem is linked to a cosmetic, people commonly assume that they are allergic to the substance concerned, which is not always the case. Most people do not know the difference between a simple case of contact dermatitis and a full blown allergic reaction nor do they know the difference between an allergy and sensitive skin. These terms are clarified in this chapter.
